ROBIN ROBERTS In Mississippi, the Gulf Coast is majestic and serene, the food is fried, and the heat is everywhere. I'm not just talking about the weather, but there is warmth in the blues music, in the soul service gospel that I heard in my church as a child and in the people. When you see someone in Pass Christian, the quintessential little town where I grew up, you stop and say hello. New in town? A neighbor will bring a bundt cake. This is what you do.

We were a military family and I grew up moving all the time. But when it came time for my father to retire from the United States Air Force, the Roberts family had to decide where we would put down roots. I am proud to say that we chose Mississippi. Limited.

Editorial reviews

"This exceptional collection meets the high standards readers have come to expect from National Geographic, providing a wonderful representation of the country's rich and diverse culture, heritage, and landscape. An impressive celebration of the beauty of a country." - Kirkus

"These are not just beautiful images; they are momentary encapsulations of people, wildlife, environment and emotions at their core." - Book list

"This generous collection of more than 250 National Geographic Society photographs, inspired, as Jill Lepore points out in the foreword, by the poem 'America the Beautiful', captures the splendor of all 50 states, as well as six US territories. The images are organized into four regions: 'The Western Pacific', where snow-covered trees are found in Yellowstone National Park and the Golden Gate Bridge in California is shown at sunset; 'The Mid-Atlantic East', where the Building Chrysler looks out over New York City and cascades over Elakala Falls in West Virginia; 'The South Caribbean', where you see a view of the valleys in Puerto Rico from the opening of Cueva Ventana and the waves crash against a pier in the Outer Banks, North Carolina; and 'The Central Midwest Plains', where a rainbow arches over a wheat field in Kansas and tourists swing on tilted glass to marvel at the v view from Chicago's 360 Observation Deck. Celebrities (and some academics) provide short but poignant comments about their connection. in every state, such as James Earl Jones in Michigan, 'a place where a child can find his true voice' and Tara Westover in Idaho, who notes that 'home is not so much a place as a lens through which we perceive world.' This is a rewarding visual journey. "Publishers Weekly

Over the last 18 years, some of the times and places (and ease with which) I’ve been able to get tattooed have genuinely surprised me. From house-parties in Berlin and Brooklyn to shops in London, Paris and Milan. Any time of day or night. Over breakfast, lunch or dinner: the list of strange scenarios goes on and on…

I wouldn’t change anything. I stand by all of the decisions I’ve made to get each and every one of my tattoos. Except maybe the drunken decision to get a unicorn on the back of my left arm…
